The Princess Bride
I just finished reading it.
When I was a kid, I don’t know about six or something, I saw the movie. Loved it. Forgot all about it.
Years later I had one of those flash backs when you remember something you loved as a kid. This has happened to me on several occasions that left me searching for a name of a movie with little more than a vague description of a few scene’s. (one of which was Dark Crystal)
But all I remembered of The Princess Bride was a man (that turned out to be Inigo Montoya played by the great Mandy Patinkin) climbing up somewhere (The Cliffs of Insanity)
and that’s all I had to go on. Until one day (after carrying that vague scene in the back of my mind for, give or take, five years) my father asked me in the midst of a conversation “have you seen The Princess Bride?”
to which I replied “The What What?” – sounds stupid, girly, and boring I thought. ha!
he went on “The Dread Pirate Roberts, The Fire Swamp, The Cliffs of Insanity…”
something clicked inside my head. “did some dude climb some cliff with just a rope?” I said.
yes. I bought the movie at once. on Video Cassette! (for those who don’t remember cassettes – think of giant computers that take up whole laboratory rooms and can do the times tables in an hour flat) and when it came out I upgraded it to DVD.
Then just a few weeks ago when I was in Angus and Robertson, skulking the classic section as I do every so often, I saw it there. I bought it without a thought. Well that’s not completely true, my one thought was – I LOVE the movie, why haven’t I thought of getting the book earlier?
and so I just finished it. I Loved it.
and you have to laugh.
because as I sometimes do when I finish a good book, I went online to see what other people have said about it. I especially like to check out people’s negative reviews. And here’s what I found – (I’ll try to put this in a way that won’t give anything away, but just in case you haven’t read it and want to, don’t read on…
Every negative review said it was because they preferred S. Morgenstern’s writing over William Golman’s!!!
Oh! People Huh?? What will they come up with next??
Check this out.

Guts
Apparently it’s made about 70 odd people faint during readings. how cool it must be to have your words effect someone on such a physical level.

Enjoy!

Day Six
I couldn’t believe it myself but by day 4 of my venture into month long (or is that month short?) novel writing I had written myself into a corner. I guess there is something to be said for having at least a little planning before diving into the deep end but then experiments need risks otherwise you’ll learn nothing,
so I spent the few short hours I had free on day five sorting my novel into scene’s using YWriter. but didn’t do very much at adding to my word count. today however, I must have written approximately four or five thousand words. which would be good except for the fact I was replacing more often than adding.
My word count has risen quite a bit but I haven’t yet made up for the two days I lost. but that will come surely.
and so I still haven’t given up and things look optimistic (for me not for my protag)
on other topics I’m quite happy – a few books I’d been meaning to get for a while finally arrived from amazon yesterday, both Philip K Dick books – Ubik and A Scanner Darkly. and have pushed there way to the front of my reading list that seems to extend itself all the time.
also if you haven’t heard of a comedian named Stephen Lynch I strongly suggest you check out some of his stuff. he’s the best musical comedian I’ve heard in a long while. there’s a fair few clips of him over at youtube so start there. some of my favorites of his songs are – Special, She gotta smile, Lullaby, Voices in my head… Well really I could go on they’re all funny as hell. so check ‘em out.
That’s all folks, talk to ya later.

Starting Points
I don’t have a great deal on my plate at the moment having successfully cut myself off from the world (with the exception of working at a petrol station) and so apart from alternating between work, writing, reading, watching movies, looking up shit on the internet and buying crap I don’t need off eBay I don’t do a great deal more.
so, on this blog you won’t find much more than that… for now….
how about a starting point for each one:
Work: I work at a petrol station. It’s a crap job but it pays just under reasonably well. I hate it. I’d leave but at the moment I wouldn’t be able to get anything much better so until I can I just have to bite my lip and take it.
Writing: Ever since I was a kid I wanted to write so you’d think I’d have come farther by now but, alas, I am a procrastinator at an almost professional level. I have many unfinished projects that I’m working on, some of which have come farther than others – last October i finished the first draft of one project only to throw away almost a third of it a week later.
I’m always on the search for a way to organize my writing better. if your a writer yourself you’ll know how bogged down you get when your trying to work on a 100 page word file, and if you haven’t found a way to organize yourself – or even if you have – i suggest checking out the programs I’ve started using recently.
Ywriter3 – organizes your writing into chapters and scenes which you can edit and sort with great ease and has separate pages for character info and chapter descriptions – it has just about everything you need for writing a novel. It was made by Simon Haynes for personal use and put on the internet as FREE WARE! (i like free ware!) download it at check it out here) At the moment I’m just finishing off Simon Haynes book Just Desserts and then I’m moving on to Arthur C Clarke’s Rendezvous with Rama.
Movies: I watch a lot of movies. my dvd collection is about four times the size of my book collection. I recently finished off my Kevin Smith Jersey Collection with finally getting a copy of Dogma.
Internet: there are a few sites that I regularly checkout – some blogs I like, a couple of Webcomics (such as a great one called The adventures of Dr. McNinja) and sometimes I even do research for my writing.
A great Firefox Add-on that I got not long after switching to Firefox is great for the avid procrastinator which is Stumbleupon. you simply setup all your interests and then get ready for some very random time waisting.
Ebay: For when you not only want to waste time but also waste money! Okay It’s not that bad – I do get a few good things off of there (I recently got an old copy of Lies, Inc by Philip K Dick) but you do end up buying shit you don’t need just because it’s under two dollars (ignore the six dollar postage!)
well I guess that’s it for this post. see ya next time I think of something to write.
