NEW DOUG OF THE DARKNESS UPDATE? – DOUBLE CHECK

That’s right, HE’S BACK!! Everybody’s favourite Scientist/adventurer who travelled to an alternate reality and was accidentally trapped there by big monsters who ate half his friends and is now trying to find a way home while at the same time discovering more about the dimension he is in is back for another update.

WAHOO!

It’s been a while since I wrote a Doug, about five or six weeks I think. So it’s good to have another one up. I hope it won’t be so long till the next one.

I am on a roll. I think now, I’m going to have a lunch break and then on to more…

Are you as excited as me?

LUNCH BREAK!!

Another Month Over

And there aren’t too many more this year. Naughty-Eight is flying by like a Penguin with a rocket pack and it doesn’t seem like anything will slow it down. Not even Batman.

At around this time every month, I’ve come on hear and written about how this coming month will be the month where everything begins clicking into place like clockwork. This coming month will be the one where I get into a routine and stick with it. This coming month will be the one where I get so much work done I’ll have sentences coming out of my ears.

And yet…

Some days I put it of until ‘later’, some days I get a little done and then take a break that lasts the rest of the day, some days I stare at the screen and say ‘….’ for a while before giving up.

BUT

This month will be the one where I get things done, Where I’ll get into a routine and everything will click into place.

I swear.

Maybe.

Lately I’ve been reading comics. I haven’t read that many comics in the past. I read spiderman and Xmen when I was a kid but I never really stuck with them.

I grew up in an area without comic book shops, and for that matter limited book shops, so I didn’t really have access to anything that wasn’t sold in newsagents.

It’s one of the things I love about this internet hooey. Access to things I’d otherwise not have access to, or even know about.

My first comic book that I actually loved was Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. I came across it in a strange way. I was searching for tattoo designs when I came across a tattoo of Nny. I searched for the title and found out it was a comic book. I downloaded all the comics and CDisplay to read them through and that was it. I had to buy them all.

Then came Y: The Last Man. I can’t remember how I came across the series but I found it around issue 20 and followed it all the way through to the end. It was a great series and, as you know, I love post-apocalypse stuff.

It’s been a year or so now since that ended, (around about, not sure of actual time though), and I haven’t read any other comics but I have been looking for other stuff I might like.

Then a few weeks ago, in much the same way as I came across JTHM, I came across a tattoo of a cool looking key. It was the key to hell that Lucifer gives to Dream in Sandman.

I thought about checking it out but I didn’t get around to it for a while

Not until, a week or so ago when I came across the trailer for the Watchmen movie and thought it looked awesome. I decided I wanted to read the comic.

So I downloaded it, and at the same time I remembered Sandman and downloaded that as well.

The first Issue of each had me hooked.

I read Watchmen right through to the end and it was great. It was also interesting coming back and watching the trailer again too. Everything made more sense and I was able to see where everything shown in the clip fit into the comic book, and made it that much better to see.

I’m still reading Sandman, I’m up to issue #39 now. It’s been awesome so far and I’ve been loving all the intertwining stories and the off shoots and the shorts between the stories as well.

Well, that’s what I’ve been doing with my time for the last couple of days anyway.

How about you?

I think I really went off topic there for a while. I was going to simply write about how I’m going to throw my all into work starting tomorrow – the 1st of August.

(interesting coincidence, kinda, One issue of Sandman that I read today was about Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus… otherwise known as Augustus…)

I think that’s all I wanted to say. Anyway, you’re boring me. Leave me alone. Go on! Git!

Until next time….

Blog Entry #45 for 2008

Welcome to Blog entry #45 for this year, which means I have already surpassed the amount of entries I wrote last year. I’m on fire, I’m on a roll. I am a rolling fire. Watch out I’ll burn you. Then I’ll administer sub-par first aid, leaving you twisted and scarred.

Oh yeah!

Last week I decided to set myself a deadline for Doug of the Darkness updates. After some serious consideration involving a coin, I decided on Thursdays.

I’m happy to say I missed my deadline… by only 14 hours. How is that? Sa-weeet!

So check out the new update here – Link

Also, I HAVE A NEW JOB!

okay… not really.

But, in an effort to be more productive, I’ve decided to do things a little differently… Or at least attempt to do things differently. You know how I am with sticking at stuff.

I’m going to try and treat writing as more of a job. With a schedule and a lunch break and shit.

The way I do it at the moment is this – My laptop sits on my coffee table, a file or two open. I write a bit when I feel like it, sometimes inspiration seems to hit and I’ll suddenly type out about five hundred, maybe a thousand words. I manage to get things done, for the most part, but I feel like I could be getting ten times as much done if I did things differently.

The other problem with doing things the way I have, is that it feels like I’m always writing and yet I hardly ever am. I don’t really have a time where I say “Nope, I’m on a break. I’ll just write a note and I’ll get onto that after lunch.”

And it’s not that I won’t write after my “work hours” because I will. But I won’t feel guilty about stopping every five minutes to watch whatever is on TV.

So I figure I’ll start about 9 or 10 o’clock. I’ll work for about three hours and have a lunch break. Maybe a half hour. Then I’ll come back and work another two hours and Bang! I’m done for the day. Five hours of work everyday, and still plenty of time to read and watch movies and shit.

So, what’d you think?

Will it work and I’ll suddenly be a super-productive writer and finally get a novel or two finished? I hope so.

I plan to start this on Monday. So I’ll let you know how I went that afternoon.

After work.

100th day of the year list.

It’s one hundred days into the year, what have you done with the time?

I decided to make a list of things I’ve done so far this year, in an effort to make it seem like I’ve been more productive than I really have been. Let’s see if it works.

1 – Work. I have spent approximately 55 to 60 days at a mind-numbing, soul-destroying job that I hate.

2 – Read. I have read 12 books so far this year. Here they are in order – Galapagos by Kurt Vonnegut, The Age of Pussyfoot by Frederik Pohl, The Day of the Triffids and The Chrysalids by John Wyndham, Perfume by Patrick Suskind, Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay, The Laughing Corpse by Laurell K. Hamilton, The Last Human by Doug Naylor, Valhalla and Falling Sideways by Tom Holt, The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde and Dearly Devoted Dexter by Jeff Lindsay. I’m now reading Dexter in the Dark by Jeff Lindsay, finishing off the three dexter books. Next I’m onto Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.

3 – Writing. I have actually done some writing this year. Not quite as much as last year thus far, Cross your fingers that’ll change. I finished a short story – Icy Dead People and once I do a second draft and some editing I’ll have finished another – Dah’Min. I’ve also begun work on a third short story, this one is set in space and written in third person and has all the death, destruction and mutilation that anybody could ask for.
In the way of novel writing, however, things have not been too great. I have only written about a thousand words for my surrealist narrative project and only about ten words in my post-apocalyptic project.
I did, however, begin what I like to call a FLog, or fictional blog (do you think it’ll catch on?), called Doug of the Darkness. It has been a great help in keeping me writing along with my blog, which I try to update as often as possible.

4 – Buying Shit. I’ve bought a few thing’s this year. Some of the things, surpirisingly enough, haven’t been an entire waste of money. I bought my spanky new laptop which I love. I also finally gave in and bought a new watch, my old one just had too much rust on it, and now I’m looking for a new set of glasses. My eyes are getting worse all the time, I can’t read the captions on Tv anymore without squinting, and so I need to find some glasses I like and will wear. Not sure what I’ll get this time, but I’ll have to put more thought into it than last time.

5 – Murder. I killed a guy. He was talking on his mobile phone in public. He was asking for it. I buried the body in my backyard but I had to move it when I noticed my dogs with some mightily suspicious bones.

6 – Lost weight. and then gained weight, then lost weight, then gained wieght, then lost weight…. I don’t think the diet is going well, though I have a suspicion that diet’s go better if you keep to them. Maybe. I’ll try it my way for a bit longer.

7 – Typed random shit. Just to make this list seem longer. Look! I’m up to number 8.

8 – Procrastinated a whole lot. Lala-de-dah-de-dah, La la lah. No one can procrastinate like me! think you can? I’ll take you on… later.

9 – Wrote this list. I thought I’d have more things to list but I petered out around three or four. But hey, I made it to nine. Seems like I’ve done a lot, doesn’t it? Jealous? Thought so.

Well that’s it for now. I’d like to leave you with some fascinating and highly philosophical words to inspire you… but I can’t be bothered. I think it’s time for a nap.

Welcome to Jeremy Boland Dot Com.

This is my brain.

Don't be afraid. Everything will be just fine.

Just sit back and enjoy the journey into the seriously mundane and trivially obscure regions of my conciousness for all the penguin references you can handle
