I Just Finished…

So, I just finished the first draft of a new short story. About a man seeking revenge. It came surprisingly fast – Monday I had barely an Idea, Tuesday I had a beginning and then I wrote most of the story on the train to Tafe yesterday, tapping away on my Treo.

And I must say – I’m pretty proud of this one right now.

So, what’s a guy to do once he’s finished a new short story? Read through it looking for mistakes? Edit it? Start a new story? Be prolific? Take care of personal business? Clean?

NAH

Mess around on the interwebs, ofcourse!

I came across this website I Write Like. A “statistical analysis tool, which analyzes your word choice and writing style and compares them to those of the famous writers.”

I popped in my very newly completed draft and was told -

I write like
Chuck Palahniuk

I Write Like by Mémoires, Mac journal software. Analyze your writing!

I played around a little, putting in a few pieces. I got Chuck Palahniuk for a few of them and also names like Stephen King, H.P. Lovecraft and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Good to know, Good to know.

First things first – Check out my site now bitches!! Yes, Yes it does rock. – www.JeremyBoland.com

It took a lot of fiddling and code writing and screwing around, and a couple of days, but I finally have this new kick ass looking site up and going. My site and my blog, which were once two separate entities are now one and the same, and all my old pages are here too. I’m not sure if I’m going to leave it opening onto my blog or make a front page but that can all come later.

My old site still exists, at least for the moment, at www.jeremyboland.com/old/.

Doug of the Darkness has reached the 10,000 word mark, and it’s still going strong-ish. If your not up to date with Doug of the Darkness or haven’t even read Doug of the Darkness, you should head over to the Doug of the Darkness website and start reading Doug of the Darkness now. You won’t be borry.

What else, What else, what else? Isn’t it always like that. You go into writing a blog entry thinking ‘how will I fill it all in?’ and then halfway through you forget all the topics you wanted to go over.

The other day I came up with a completely new idea for a book. What I mean is – Most of the things I’ve worked on in the last (I don’t know how long) have been rewrites of old stuff, working on old ideas or it was based on two old ideas put together… so on and so forth in that fashion, you get the idea.

I mentioned it in passing in the last entry but that was only when it was an inkling of an instigating circumstance. But slowly it grew in my head and at the worst possible moment, while I was at work, more and more ideas hit me. Between customers and fixing a cupboard door that fell off it’s hinges I wrote a whole synopsis of a back story for the novel in my moleskine.

(I’m very excited about this)

I’m not sure if it’s going to be one persons stories (probably in first person) or a series of interrelated stories that encompass the whole events… I’m leaning toward the latter. Just know, I have some great ideas for it either way and I can’t wait to get started on it.

But first, my workspace could do with a bit of a tidy up… ;)

Also excited about – Act One of Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog is released today. I’m a big Whedon fan, Fillion fan and Doogie Fan, So this is just Awesome.

In other news, I just finished reading Hal Spacejock 4: No Free Lunch, and I recommend it to anyone who likes fun and light scifi about interesting characters with quite a few laugh out loud moments. Not only is this a great series, by the way, but they work as stand alone novels as well, There are references to previous novels but nothing that would confuse a new reader.

At the moment I’m reading The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury and I’m loving it. My favourite section so far is ‘Night Meeting’… with ‘And the Moon be still as bright’ coming up second.

Anyway, I think that’s all for now. In the mean time check out this hilarious clip of Patrick Stewart in Extras

P.S. – Do people actually buy these things?

Two Days in and Failing Like a Champ

It’s the end of day two of 2008 and I have kept exactly 0 of my resolutions. But that’s okay – my resolutions are more long term than short term goals.

I did a little writing on project #2 – though I haven’t even reached my daily goal for the first day yet. I wrote enough to mark the page; rid myself of the evil blank page and have a starting point. Tomorrow I will catch up. I will catch up, I will catch up.

I also peddled about 3k on my exercise bike. Though since I had pizza for lunch and Ice cream after dinner it was a sort of one step forward and five steps back sort of deal.

I waisted a whole bunch of time moving my blog from LiveJournal to here and adding a little iframe of it on the index page of my website. It didn’t take long to do but adjusting the theme and plugins and background took up a big chunk of time. So appreciate it damn you!

Apart from that I haven’t done a great deal this year.

Tomorrow I’m going to be a little more strict about my resolutions… and if not – Friday.

That’s all folks.

Yeehaa!

I know what you’re all thinking. “It’s about bloody time”

My site The Adventures of the Man that did Nothing is finally up and running at www.JeremyBoland.com

How Exciting!.

It was a bit of a pain to get going at first but it was up and going fairly easily. That is, until I tried to open it on IE. things were in the wrong place, the sidebar was hanging off the edge and cut in half, it was a mess. But slowly as I went through I found the problems and managed to fix them. (how someone with two days knowledge of html code managed it – I don’t know) but I did, barely.

So Enjoy.

That’s right. My own domain. Can you say KICK-ASS!!??

Last night / this morning when I was avoiding writing again. (even though I came up with a couple of ideas of where to take my NaNo story and even though I’m about 15,000 words behind.) I, for some reason that eludes me momentarily, decided to look up how much domain names and web hosting cost. It turns out that it’s a lot cheaper than the last time I checked into it – about 4 or 5 years ago.

I almost impulse bought my domain name but somehow I’ve gained a small amount of self control somewhere along the way and so I managed to hold myself off jumping and decided to sleep on it (unfortunately my insomnia is still hanging over me right now and so it was more ‘shut eyes on it’ than ‘sleep on it’)

now you may be asking the same question that I asked myself. – What the hell do I need my own name in dot.com highlights? well the answer is – cause I wanna! leave me alone, you’re just jealous.

then around 8:00 this morning, when I sat down to write again, I thought ‘well, hey, if I have my own domain then I’m going to have to write a website for it.

so instead of putting in a hard days game of catch up as I’d planned, I instead spent the day playing around with YGen and it’s sample files – in the process, learning how to write html. (well, not on any professional level but I don’t have to copy link codes just to make links anymore) and when I realised that I’d made one pretty kick ass site. Well, then I decided to throw down some dosh on my own triple-double-u.

so, that being said, keep an eye out for www.JeremyBoland.com

Cheers!

Welcome to Jeremy Boland Dot Com.

This is my brain.

Don't be afraid. Everything will be just fine.

Just sit back and enjoy the journey into the seriously mundane and trivially obscure regions of my conciousness for all the penguin references you can handle
